As much fun as that may be, at times we have to stick out heads out of sand and pay attention to all that is around us. For you skeptics out there, please watch the video below. I personal believe everything has its own place, medicine has its place and so does chiropractic and utilizing each of them in the correct manner, can save millions of lives not to mention millions of dollars. 9 Foods NOT to Give Your Children

Many children aren’t getting the nutrients they need out of the foods they are eating.  Childhood obesity is on the rise and most signs are pointing to the next generation having a life expectancy that is shorter than their parents’.  With this being said, here are some healthier options for your children.

Chicken Nuggets/tenders: These are high in high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), sodium, fried in hydrogenated oils (the bad tras-nfatty stuff), and dipped in sugary HFCS sauces.  Often, they do not even have chicken listed as the first ingredient. Instead: Grill a chicken breast and cut into dipping sized pieces.  Make a sauce free of HFCS.  HFCS free – Ketchup, marinara sauce, mustard, or yogurt are good options.

Sugary Cereal: Contain large amounts of sugar, grams of fat, and hundreds of empty calories. Instead:  Read the labels.  Find a cereal that is low in sugar, high in fiber and whole grains.  Don’t forget, “wheat” isn’t the same as “whole wheat”.  You will also want to avoid cereals (including some granolas) with hydrogenated oils, artificial colors, or chemical preservatives.  To spice it up, add raisins, sliced bananas or berries.

Lunch Meat and Hot Dogs: These foods are full of potentially carcinogenic nitrates and nitrites, sodium, saturated fat, and artificial colors and fillers. Instead: Use unprocessed meats like lean turkey breast, chicken, tuna, or roast beef.  Use whole wheat bread for sandwiches.

Fruit is THE best sank

Juice and Juice Flavored Drinks: Too much juice can lead to tooth decay and obesity, among other problems.  Juice doesn’t have the fiber of whole fruit and provides mostly calories from sugar and carbohydrates.  Many times, juices are laced with HFCS and artificial colors. Instead: Water is the best option.  Set the example by drinking water yourself.  Have your kids get used to carrying a small water bottle made from reusable hard plastic or stainless steel.  If they’re very water adverse, try water with a splash of juice or lemons, limes, or oranges.

French Fries:  Fries are high in calories, fat and sodium.  They offer virtually none of the nutrients found in other vegetables.  They are often fried in trans fatty oils. Instead:  Try getting your kids to eat other types of vegetables.   If they insist on eating potatoes, try these options.  Use a scooped out potato and fill it with low fat chili and a little cheese.  Another option is making baked fries.  Use slices of potatoes and a light brushing of coconut oil.

Potato Chips, Cheetos, Doritos, etc:  These are full of saturated fat and way more sodium than any child or adult should eat. Also, watch out for innocent seeming baked and low fat chips that contain olestra or other fake chemicals and fats.

Instead:   Cut up veggies are the best snack option for a crunchy snack.  Kids can also eat air popped popcorn made with coconut oil.  Or, try making your own trail mix with the kids.  Avoid marshmallows and light chocolate in the trail mix.

 

Fruit Leather:  These contain trace amounts of fruit but lots of sugar or HFCS and artificial colors.  Real fruit is in the produce section, not the candy aisle. Instead: Real fruit is best.  If they won’t eat plain fruit, try this.  Freeze grapes or bananas.  You can also give them raisins, dried apricots, apples, peaches, will also give the chewy, leathery texture with less sugar.

Doughnuts:  These are full of trans fats and sugar.  Toaster pastries, muffins, and cinnamon buns aren’t any better. Instead:  A slice of whole wheat toast with  peanut butter isn’t going to get as many fans as doughnuts but, at some point, you have to stand firm.  Don’t eat them. Period.

 Pizza: Most pizzas contain processed meats like pepperoni and sausage, which add fats and nitrates/nitrites.  The overabundance of cheese also adds more calories and fat than a child needs.  Instead:  Try making your own pizza.  Use whole wheat crust .  Use a HFCS free sauce, and add healthy ingredients like diced chicken, and vegetables.

Fever? good or bad?

…it is both actually. Fever lets us know body is fighting something. It is our natural defense mechanism.  For adults and toddlers anything above 104 F, for children above 103.5 and for infants above 100.4 F  is considered high and needs to be brought down to prevent possible brain damage. However,  a mild fever does not need to be reduced at all since it server a great purpose in out body.

Boiling water kills most bacteria and viruses, right? Fever plays a similar role, so why would anyone want to bring it down?

According to science daily; “Because fever can actually help lower the amount of virus in a sick person’s body and reduce the chance of transmitting disease to others, taking drugs that reduce fever can increase transmission. Good information to have for all the new parents out there. According to wellnessmama.com,  when it comes to fever,  seek help when:

  • A child under three months has a fever over 100.4 or exhibits any serious symptoms
  • A child has a fever over 104 as this can signal a more serious infection or poisoning
  • A child has a fever for more than two consecutive days
  • The ill person has other symptoms like stiff neck, listlessness, or sensitivity to light
  • The person is unable to hold down food for more than a few hours or shows any signs of dehydration
  • Person exhibits any sign of respiratory distress (Seek immediate help)
  • Person has been exposed to toxins or poisons that may have caused the fever
  • My mother’s intuition says there is something more serious going on, even if the child appears fine

9 out of 10 times after people find out what I do for a living, after a long oooooooooooooom they point to their backs or necks and say; ” my back / neck is killing me”.  What they are missing out on is the fact that, being under chiropractic care, being proactive about health, being informed  and acting upon it can save lives!

Chiropractic improves the way out body functions. When your body is working at a higher level, it can fight more bacteria and viruses on it’s own than anything that comes from a bottle. If you are not under Chiropractic care, all I can say is that you absolutely need to, your”ll thank me for it.

Seven Wonders of the World

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present “Seven Wonders of the World”.

Though there were some disagreement, the following received the most votes:

1) Egypt’s Great Pyramids, 2) Taj Mahal, 3) Grand Canyon, 4) Panama Canal, 5) Empire State Building, 6) St. Peter’s Basilica, 7) China’s Great Wall

While gathering the votes the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, ” Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.” The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help”. The girl hesitated, then read: “I think the ‘Seven Wonders of the World are:

1) To see, 2) To hear, 3) To touch, 4) To taste, 5) To feel, 6) To laugh and 7) To love.

The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous.

I must admit, getting up before 8 AM has becoming challenging lately. An attempt to do so feels like absolute torture at times, however,  after I scrape myself off my bed, wash up, change my clothes, kiss my puppy and put my sneakers on to head to the gym, it feels quite empowering.

You know genes aren’t everything…

The August 31, 2010 issue of PLoS Medicine found that physical activity can reduce the genetic tendency towards obesity by 40%.

According to Ruth Loos, the senior researcher at Great Britain’s Medical Research Council in Cambridge, England…”Our findings challenge the popular myth that obesity is unavoidable if it runs in the family.  We see this as a hopeful message.”

You can get the benefits without running marathons, according to the researchers.  “Being active about 30 minutes a day is a good start in reducing the effects of the genes.”

U.S. experts say the study adds to the data on the importance of exercise for weight control. “This is more evidence that behavior can modify genetic predisposition,” says Tim

Church, director of preventive medicine research at the PenningtonBiomedicalResearchCenter in Baton Rouge, LA.

According to John Jakicic, director of the Physical Activity and Weight Management Research at the University of Pittsburgh, “just because someone has the genes does not mean that they will become overweight or obese.  “Lifestyle such as physical activity can modify the effect.”

US Government guidelines say that adults need at least 2 hours of moderate-intensity activity (brisk walk) weekly or 1 hour of a vigorous-intensity activity (jogging or lap swimming) or a combination of the two types. These activities should be done for at least 10 minutes at a time spread throughout the week.

For even more health benefits, the US Government recommends that people engage in 5 hours of moderate-intensity physical activity each week or 2 hours of vigorous activity.  They also recommend that adults include strength training for all major muscle groups two or more days a week.  For those of you that are paying attention…they are not recommending exercise… they are recommending that exercise become part of your healthy lifestyle.  Healthy eating helps too!
